Welcome to the Opal Class Page

Hello my name is Miss Turner and I am the 4 teacher this year in Opal class!

This is my second year at Dunsville Primary School.
I love teaching and being in the classroom. My favourite subjects to teach are English and Art. I love to paint and draw things which are linked to our class topic so that together, we can create some fantastic displays.
I have always enjoyed reading, I love David Walliams, Roald Dahl and Dr Seuss books because they are different and funny. My personal favourite is ‘Gangsta Granny’, which we will hopefully read together this year!
I hope we will have a fantastic year and great time together in year 4.

What exciting things we will be doing during Spring Term?

Topic: Ancient Egyptians
During the Spring Term, we will be looking closely at the topic Ancient Egyptians. We will be exploring Egyptian lifestyles, jobs, homes, clothing and lots more. The children will have the fantastic opportunity to create their own Egyptian artwork and investigate the tomb of Tutankhamun.

We are currently writing a Non-chronological report all about the Egyptians, where the children have been able to research lots of information using topic books and the internet, ready to use in the structure of a report. Once these have been completed, we will be moving onto writing a persuasive letter, linked to our previous book 'Perry Angel's Suitcase', which the children thoroughly enjoyed and produced great stories from it.

What have Opal class been up to?

Spreading Christmas joy

During the lead up to Christmas, we watched the Sainsbury’s Christmas advert, which explained to the children that not everyone is lucky enough to spend the Christmas period, including Christmas day, with their families because they have to work. The children designed and wrote Christmas cards to send to different people who work at Christmas, and these were sent to the Children’s ward a DRI, the Doncaster Fire Station and the Doncaster Police Station. The Chief Superintendent himself from the Police Station showed his gratitude by sending the children an email and tweeting the following tweet! The children were so pleased that they liked them.

World Book Week

During the week commencing 6th March. Year 4 have taken part in lots of Book Week activities based around the theme Roald Dahl. It was fantastic to see and hear all about the books they have already read and everything they knew about Roald Dahl. Opal class spent the week writing brilliant setting descriptions all about Willy Wonka's Factory in the Chocolate Room, where they showed off their descriptive writing, with the use of adjectives, similes, alliteration and metaphor.

The whole school had the opportunity to be apart of a Roald Dahl workshop based on the story 'George's Marvellous Medicine'. They all created a potion and described the ingredients and the affect of drinking it. Once they had completed it, they decorated their cardboard bottles with collage. Check out the activity in the pictures below:

As part of Book Week, on Friday 10th March, the children looked super, as they arrived at school in their Roald Dahl outfits. We saw everything from an Oompa-Loompa to the Roly Poly Bird! For years 3 and 4, this day was also our Roald Dahl Activity day, where the children were mixed into different groups from the four classes and rotated round four different activities: Willy Wonka's inventing room, A present from Roald Dahl, George's Marvellous medicine and BFG's Dream Jars. They had a great day, which you can see in the pictures below:

  • Please ensure your child brings their reading book and reading record into school every day and takes it home every day, so that they have lots of opportunities to read and enjoy books with adults. Please support your child by hearing them read at home on a regular basis or reading to your child also supports their skills.
  • Please ensure your child’s dinner money is inside a named envelope and that it is handed in at the beginning of every week. Furthermore, please notify the school office two weeks in advance if you wish for your child to move onto school dinners.
  • Homework will be given out every Monday and the type of homework will vary from week to week. Please support your child to complete their homework, on time, for the following Monday.
  • If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to come into school to discuss these between 8.30-8.45am and from 3.30pm onwards. I am looking forward to getting to know you and working together so that we have a very exciting and successful term. If you have any queries do not hesitate to come in and speak with me.
