Dear Parent/Carer

In response to a parent’s request, we would like to inform you of some of the work your child will be covering this half term.

We hope you find this useful.

SUBJECT

Year Group: 1 and 2                      Term: Autumn 1st Half

English

Through Literacy this term we will be reading and learning about Fiction texts. We will learn specifically about story settings and creating interesting characters. Children will also continue to concentrate on writing sentences using the correct format and will be taught how to check through their work to make sure it makes sense. Year 2s will also look at using the appropriate  use of the word endings ‘s’, ‘ed’ and ‘ing’ to indicate the correct tense.

Our phonic work his term will be practicing recognising the graphemes we have learned last half term.

Handwriting will be practised weekly and the children will be expected to concentrate on this through all of their written work. Joining techniques will also start to be introduced.

We ask for your continued support in listening to your child read at home as often as possible. Children receive a sticker if they read 4 or more days in a week. When they have 10 stickers they can take something from our class treat box!

Maths

In Numeracy this half term the class will be covering a range of topics. We will start off with counting and number recognition. We will use 2 and 3 digit numbers and Year 2s will also be continuing to focus on counting in steps of 2, 5 and 10 to count larger numbers of objects. We will move onto learning about time, measuring weight, position and also include halving. We will be looking at the operation of addition and subtraction and throughout the whole of the term we will be solving word problems and puzzles on the topics we have covered. Year 2s will also be learning how to multiply and divide and translate this into a number sentence.

Science

Our topic for science this half term is ‘Light and Dark’. In this unit children will learn about the need for light in order to see things. Children will learn about darkness being an absence of light and will identify different light sources.
