Year Group: 3 Term: Spring 1st half

English
|
This half term in English the children will be reading and writing adventure and mystery stories. The children will be exploring characters in stories. They will be describing characters and thinking about they act in different settings. The children will be describing events in stories using first person. They will be using present and past tense verbs. The children will be writing their own adventure story with a clear beginning, middle and end. They will be writing dialogue, using speech marks correctly and interesting words for said. The children will be using paragraphs to organise their writing. The children will polish and improve their own writing. |
Maths

This half term in Maths the children will be extending number sequences. They will be developing their understanding of multiplication and division. They will be learning to solve multiplication questions by using arrays and the grid method. They will think of division as grouping and sharing. The children will also develop their understanding of addition and subtraction. They will be using the partitioning method to solve addition questions and use number lines to subtract. The children will be solving word problems involving all four of the number operations.

Science
|
Our Science topic this half term is ‘Rocks and Soils.’ The children will recognise that underneath all surfaces is rock, which they may not be able to see. They will learn that rock gets broken down into pebbles and soils that we can often see, and that there are different sort of rock with different characteristics. The children will learn that pebbles and soils from different rocks have different characteristics.

Other

Our topic this half term is local history. The children will examine buildings and features of the local area and know that the locality has changed over time. The children will explore if the Romans came to the local area. They will look at maps from the past and present, they will compare features of the maps. The children will ask and answer questions and make deductions about the area by using historical sources in a variety of ways.
