    Year Group:  4                       Term: Summer 2nd half

English

In English this half term the children will be developing their understanding of poetry, play scripts and persuasive texts.  In our first unit of work this half term the children will be studying different types of poetry including Haikus and Acrostic poems, studying and exploring their different forms in detail. The children will plan and write their own Haiku and Acrostic poems. Later in the term we will be looking at different types of play scripts where the children will work in small groups and work together to re-enact them while following different stage directions within the text. During the final unit of persuasion the children will examine a range of different text and explore language that persuades. The children will then use the features they find to inform their own texts including formats such as posters and letters. We will be continuing to work on word walls and handwriting throughout the term.

Maths

In Maths this half term the children will be looking at ‘Handling Data and Measures’, ‘Calculating, Measuring and Understanding Shape’ and ‘Securing Number Facts, Relationships and Calculating’. During these units the children will refine their skills especially in measuring in different formats and reading data from a series of charts and graphs. The children will also continue their understanding of times tables for additional stickers for their Timelord book marks.

Science

In science this term we will be looking at ‘Light and Shadow’ where the children will be exploring how shadows are formed and different sources of light. Later in the unit the children will construct sun dials in teams and monitor them throughout a day. During this term will also have a science week in which the whole school will work together to solve a crime scene investigation. 

Other

We will continue with the topics discussed in the last parents forecast throughout the term including additional units of introducing databases and observational drawing. We will also continue our work on e-mail throughout the term where the class will send and reply to e-mails. Most of our PE this term will be focused outside weather permitting and I would like to request that the children have their outdoor kits for each day of school just in case the weather is nice.
