English

This half term our work in English lessons will be closely linked to our work in Geography, on ‘mountains’. We will be looking at various types of journalistic writing, including newspaper reports and TV news programmes. The children will be given the opportunity to write their own newspaper report based on a fictional mountain disaster. The children will also be working as part of a team to produce a TV news programme. Our second topic this half term will be poetry, again this will be linked to the theme of mountains.

Maths

The children will carry out a variety of different maths investigations this half term, including those designed by themselves. They will use the data collected to create graphs and charts. We will be revising 2D and 3D shapes, ensuring that we are familiar with the properties of these. We will also learn how to draw shapes with increasing accuracy, using rulers and protractors. We will also be looking at probability, deciding on the likelihood an event will or will not take place.

Science

We will be learning about ‘micro-organisms,’ and how these can be both helpful and harmful. The children will learn about the work of Edward Jenner, and will carry out a variety of different experiments of their own. Another key science topic this half term is, ‘keeping healthy.’ They will learn about the key things needed for healthy lifestyle, and will work as part of a group to produce their own healthy eating display in school.

Other

Our main topic this half term is ‘mountains,’ and much of our work in other topics will be connected to this. We will be investigating the key mountain ranges in the world, and the children will produce a power-point presentation about their chosen mountain range. We will be designing and making a ski-lift in D.T.
