Communication language and literacy

We will be introducing the next phase of our phonics learning this half term all the children should be now know what each of the 26 individual letters sounds are (and a few more e.g. ll,ss,zz) we will now progress onto the digraphs phonemes. The children will be introduced to sounds such as ch, sh, th, oa, ee, oo etc…

Children will be introduced to fiction and non fiction texts within our role play area which is a library this half term. Children will make labels and captions for photographs and pictures we are familiar with and children will begin to segment and blends word with the initial phonics.

Problem solving reasoning and numeracy

Children will use the number names to 10 when talking about numerals in simple number sentences they will be encouraged to recite the number names to 20. We will introduce the children to the more complex measures such as capacity and weight and children will use the words more less and bigger or smaller when comparing two groups of objects or two numbers.

Our shape focus is 3D shapes (solid shapes) and children will be encouraged to name the shapes, sphere, cube, cone etc…

Children will talk about symmetrical patterns and patterns in the environment and then produce their own symmetrical patterns.

We will have a push on the time and children will use the words morning afternoon, days of the week, first, next, last and if they are confident with the language we will look at o’clock and half past etc…

Other areas of the curriculum

Our half term focus is Christmas and we will link this to our light and dark focus. As part of our literacy/ICT activity this half term children will be using simple keyboard fuctions and the mouse. Children will be encouraged to use the My World program and sort fruits into sets according to colour/ size etc… We will introduce Maisy bear and her scrapbook about her travels and children will be intoduced to a variety of cultures, beliefs and views.
